Understanding Crane Types

Not all cranes are built for the same work. The two most common types used on commercial and industrial construction projects in Texas are hydraulic truck cranes and lattice boom crawler cranes. Each has distinct advantages depending on the job.

Hydraulic Truck Cranes

Hydraulic truck cranes — like the Link-Belt HTC 8670 (70-ton capacity) — are the workhorses of commercial construction. They drive to the job site on public roads, set up quickly with hydraulic outriggers, and can be working within an hour of arrival. They're ideal for:

Crawler cranes require more setup time and mobilization equipment, but for heavy lifts there's no substitute. When your project demands 100+ tons at height, a crawler crane is the right tool.

Key Factors in Choosing a Crane

1. Load Weight

This is the starting point. Know the exact weight of what you're lifting — including rigging, spreader bars, and any attached hardware. Always factor in a safety margin. If your heaviest lift is 50 tons, a 70-ton crane gives you the margin you need. If your loads exceed 100 tons, you're looking at a large crawler crane.

2. Lift Height and Radius

A crane's capacity decreases as the boom extends and the radius increases. A 230-ton crane doesn't lift 230 tons at full boom extension — that rating is at minimum radius. Your crane rental company should review the load chart for your specific lift to ensure the crane can handle the weight at the required height and distance.

For example, setting an HVAC unit on a 4-story building requires less reach than placing steel on a 10-story structure. The height and distance from the crane to the load placement point determine which crane — and which boom configuration — you need.

3. Job Site Conditions

The physical conditions of your construction site matter as much as the lift itself. Consider:

  • Ground conditions — can the site support the crane's ground bearing pressure?
  • Access — are roads wide enough for the crane and support trucks?
  • Overhead obstructions — power lines, adjacent buildings, existing structures
  • Space — is there room for outriggers or crawler tracks to fully extend?
  • Wind exposure — open sites may have wind restrictions for certain lifts

A tight downtown Dallas construction site may require a truck crane that can set up in a compact footprint. An open industrial site in the Permian Basin may have space for a large crawler crane but need ground matting for stability.

4. Project Type and Duration

The type of construction work and how long you need the crane should guide your decision:

  • Steel erection — often requires sustained multi-day crane presence with high capacity
  • HVAC installation — typically short-duration lifts with a truck crane
  • Equipment setting — single-day lifts for generators, chillers, or industrial machinery
  • Tilt-wall construction — requires careful sequencing and often a larger crane
